| May
1, 1999 was the first Annual celebration of "THE SPIRIT OF SABINE PASS"
It was a great success. This year was the 160th year since
the founding of Sabine Pass. Texas President, General Sam Houston,
was a promoter and founder of Sabine Pass, chartered in 1839.

There
is an old cemetery out on the road to McFadden's Beach called McGaffey
Cemetery. It has grown over with brush and has fallen victim to vandals.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans and Commissioner Hallmark and his Jefferson
County crew have plans to clean up the area. Goals are to collect
broken stones, repairing the stones when possible, plot the location of
the graves, fence the area to keep large animals and four wheelers out,
and develop a drive-through gate that will be locked. A walk-in entrance
will be established for access of those wishing to visit the site.
There is a large "Angel" headstone in the cemetery (photo) that has, sadly,
been used for target practice..."shooters" have destroyed this "Angel's"
head. Ryle Adamson |

Sabine Pass Lions Club and the Jefferson County Historical Commission will
honor the Union and Confederate veterans buried in the McGaffey Cemetery
in September. Contact the Sabine Pass Chamber of Commerce for details.
